Fact: Lightroom, Flickr, Firefox, and color profiles

Monday, March 17th, 2008

Interesting results:

lightroom vs firefox

Lightroom uses, and saves, color profile information to your JPEGs. But when you load those in Flickr, in Firefox, you lose the color profile and Firefox uses sRGB. So things look “off”.

What to do? Upgrade to Firefox 3(beta) and then go to about:config, and change:

gfx.color_management.enabled to true

(you can just double click on the config line)

Restart firefox and Viola! you now have color-matched graphics! …of course, you could also just buy a Mac.

Update: Apple also just released Safari 3.1, which also honors embedded color profiles (3.0.4 did, as well, but had a long standing ‘crashes on startup’ problem on all of my computers, so I can’t prove it.)

Fact: Linux 2.6.16 and LVM

I’d just like to point out again, lvcreate and lvremove snapshots don’t work in 2.6.16 with the stable versions of lvm and devmapper. DELICIOUS!

Fact: Sociology

The Japanese can sometimes be a little scary.

Part of it is the sheer compactness of the culture. In america it takes time for microfads to turn into full blown fads, or to be noticed. In places like japan, or in the club scenes in the UK, really crazy and sometimes brilliant trends can pop up and take root. Of course, Visual Kei such as Gothic Lolita or, god help us, ganguro, are hopefully just signs, much like rampant flag-waving, of a neurotically repressed culture

The thing I find most disturbing is that the flag waving shirt is being sold in Sweden. Really… are swedes that into line dancing? Yumpin’ Yimminy, Sven!

Fact: Don’t touch that thing!

Seriously, people… What the fuck..

what the fuck??? Wash my hands? After using my mouse?

Okay, consumer-protection has gone too far. What’s next? Signs on all front doors that say “Leaving your home may get you shot, run over, give you cancer from being in the sun, put you at risk of job-induced stress. Go back inside now.”???

Perhaps we should just start putting everyone in bubbles once they’re born.

Magic!
